My recollection -- and Ralph will surely correct me on this -- is that the
Building Code allows A/C units to project ten inches.

Any way that dfies gravity. I recently heard that there is a NYC code on how
far out of a window that an A/C unit is allowed to extend. I don't think
anyone is paying attention. A/C units tend to be poorly supported and
present
a hazard to swing stage scaffolding crews as a result.
