Checkerplate steel?  Is that what you call the steel sheets (typical on
battleships or sidewalk vault covers or tow trucks) with the raised
herringbone pattern to prevent skids?

I once asked a builder what it was called -- he said "diamond-board".
Of course that could be somebody's brand name.

The new train station in Battle Creek, Michigan (a city that didn't *need*
a new train station since it already had two historic train stations, but
I don't make these decisions) is full of this stuff ("checkerplate steel"
or "diamond-board" or whatever) as a kind of faux-industrial design motif.
