Some 10 years ago, a road widening project north of Eugene, Oregon involved
the destruction of a row of mature osage orange trees. The residents of the
affected home were heart-broken -- as I recall, there were some familial
connections with the trees. They also provided a buffer from road noise.
The residents' discontent made the local papers, so a friend and I drove up
to look at the damage. Beautiful, rich coppery-orange stumps, a whole bunch
of woodworkers negotiating for the rest, and the usual cast of outraged
citizens. It was a sad circus.
