Not popping the finals on this rig is pretty straightforward if you have a
meter capable of measuring SWR at fairly low power levels, say 2 to 5
watts. You put an antenna tuner on the radio. Initially peak the radio
for maximum receiver noise--that will get you somewhere in the
neighborhood. Then put the radio in the CW mode if it isn't already there
and feed it just enough carrier to get a decent SWR reading and adjust the
tuner for minimum SWR. When it looks like you have a match, feed it the
full scooch and do any final tweaks to get any remaining mismatch tuned
out. I used this method with the TS130S and the Ten Tec 228 antenna tuner
without ever having a problem.
By the way, the Ten Tec 228 is an awesome tuner if you are operating in the
100 watt class. You cannot run a linear amp through it, so it isn't for
the big boys, but basically that tuner is so versatile that if you can't
load it with that tuner, you can't load it. It used to tune stuff down
flat that my Dentron Super Tuner wouldn't touch. It's pretty
straightforward to tune with the LDG TW1 meter, too. Yes the Ten Tec 228
is one of the few pieces that has survived from my original station--nearly
every other piece of equipment has been replaced at least once.
