I know this subject has been thrashed, but a new development.

a friend of mine has introduced me to the Mil Spec version.

This is much easier to fit, but about twice the price.

The outer is soldered to a sleeve which is passed into the barrel of the
plug and held in situ with a locking threaded collar.  The tip is then
soldered.

Job done.
