Hi JOhn,
Yes you are correct in your assumption that you have to pick a menu 
selection before chaging the internal battery of the Yaesu FT817ND.

Without using a menu control program like commander or Ham Radio Deluxe I 
doubt that you could change that option independently.

For more info talk to Debbie Norling.

She has a Yaesu FT817ND and uses the old commander software.
