Hello friends,

Here is a quick Write up I did on this radiation belt that was just
discovered.
So, what is the news about the newly discovered Radiation Belt around the
Earth?
March 7, 2013 : Jose Tamayo, KK4JZX

Destroyed by a shock wave from the Sun, the new belt was discovered by NASA
when the twin spacecrafts were launched to study the well known Van allen
rings discovered in 1958. The Van Allen rings are two doughnut-shaped
rings of highly charged particles encircling the Earth. Now there is a
third radiation belt but it is gone. Scientist are trying to determine what
it is and how it was created. For one month, before the Sun destroyed it,
it was visible.

The Van Allen belts are known to have outer and inner radiation formations
and have been very well known for many decades now. Particle sensors
studied the new third radiation belt for one month before it was anielated.

The Van allen belts, when originally discovered, had no impact on society.
Nowadays, we observe the belts because the Sun's effect on them can reap
havoc on communication systems across the globe. Scientist are theorizing
that the new third belt appeared after a large prominence on the surface of
the Sun erupted on August 31, 2012 causing a shockwave accompanied by
particles which travelled near Earth. A few days later, the newly formed
third belt appeared. The interplanetary shockwave which followed, cause the
third belt to disappear. This new belt was made up of super-high energy
electrons that form the third layer in the Van allen belt system about
between 11,900 to 13,900 miles above the planet's surface. Scientists do
not know if this newly discovered outer belt appears predictably and thus
more observations are scheduled.
The impac on Amateur Radio is unknown but NASA is continuing to study the
phenomenon. Although it is gone for now, Scientists do not know if it
will return.

73,
Jose - KK4JZX
