Michael,

Turning the mic on or off won't do anything except make a nice loud pop.
You will either need to find a PTT lead somewhere on the back of the radio,
or figure out some way to use the PTT connection from the mic connector on
the front. If you're serious about experimenting with other mics through a
mixer, you may want to visit www.w2ihy.com, where you'll find several items
of interest. One of these is an interface box for connecting various
devices to the mic input of your radio. The box is somewhat pricey, but it
contains circuitry for isolating RF from the audio, as well as a gain
control so you can vary the audio level from the output of your mixer. The
box also has an RCA jack which connects to the PTT lead on the mic connector
so you can key the radio without having to use the PTT button on a
microphone.
