Colleen,

There is a good accessible ht in the field now.  It's the Kenwood TH-F6A.
It covers 144/220/440 with general coverage receive.  The menus have beeps
at specific locations.  All functions are associated with tones that vary in
pitch as well indicating function, mode and ctcss/dcs.
