I had a dj-582, same rig without the cellular coverage.

I didn't find it totally inaccessible, some things were an adventure
to do but I could make the radio do what I wanted.

I'd get into a mode occasionally I couldn't get out of such as the
dtmf memory function, and a couple times did a hard reset on the
radio, and this was on a cross country bus trip to boot. I was able
to reprogram the memories and get it back to functioning again.

My Kenwood thg-71a is much easier to program but I could get it done.
I've got an ascii manual somewhere if you end up buying the rig, and
George Fanjoy might have it in his archives as well.

If you put garbage in a computer nothing comes out but garbage. But
this garbage, having passed through a very expensive machine, is
somehow enobled and none dare criticize it.
