After I painfully program 25 or 30 memory channels will
the thing speak the frequency of the memories as I scroll through them?

Not the frequency, only the channel number.

The programming cable is USB.

The handiham newsletter makes reference to a TH-UVF1 handheld.

I'm not familiar with that one. But, radios similar to the Wouxun are floating around on EBay with various names and model numbers. Some of them have speech similar to the Wouxun, many do not.

To my knowledge, none of them speak anything but channel number when in memory mode.
