Yeah, it's probably normal, but it may mean that you are over-driving the 
mic circuit.

I used to have a 751, and I was told that my best mic gain level was when 
the little indentation on the front of the mic gain knob was at the 9 
o'clock position.  You just find the indent with a thumb-nail, and take it 
up to the 9 o'clock position.

Not too technologically sophisticated, but hey, it worked, and kept me out 
of trouble most of the time.
