I suspect grounding.  I'll be interested to see if you get different 
behavior if you start using counterpoises on that antenna.  I strongly 
suspect that it will arrest your RF in the shack problem.  Usually for 
wires that are loaded against ground, a single cable going down to an 8 ft 
ground stake won't be enough to keep RF out of the shack and there will be 
some bands that won't load well.  I had an arrangement like that a few 
years ago, and I could make the SWR change just by waving my hand over the 
tuner.  If I touched anything metal while that antenna was loaded on 20 
meters, it felt just like I grabbed the wrong end of a hornet!
