Hi Jeffrey.

You are probably getting the pop-ups for Automatic Updates. If you want to
use the automatic updates, you can respond to these popups through the
System Tray. If you don't want to be constantly bugged by Microsoft
because they found the umpteenth security hole in Windows XP, you can turn
these messages off by pressing WINDOWS LOGO+BREAK to pop up the System
Properties dialog box. You will be in the General page. Press the
CTRL+TAB a few times until you get to the Automatic Updates page. If you
uncheck the first checkbox on this page, you will completely disable the
Automatic Update feature. Or, if you want the system to update, but don't
want to be nagged about it, you can adjust the radio buttons below to
update automatically on a schedule that you set. Whichever way you decide
to handle it, you can tab down to the Ok button and use your SPACE BAR to
put the changes into effect.

Another thing I found about Windows XP that I didn't like and got rid of in
a hurry was the Windows Desktop Clean Up Wizard. It nags you to get rid of
any icons that you haven't used in the last 60 days. Just because I don't
use something all the time doesn't mean that I want it to be gone.

Here's how to get rid of the Clean Up Wizard. Go to your Control Panel,
and go to the Display icon. Either press the ENTER key when the focus is
on the Display icon, or double-click on it.

Then when the Display dialog opens, press CTRL+TAB once to get onto the
Desktop page. Then press the TAB key until you get to the Customize
Desktop button. Press the SPACE BAR. Another dialog will open. TAB
through it until you come to a checkbox that says "Run Clean Up Wizard
every 60 days. Use your SPACE BAR to uncheck this checkbox. Then TAB
down to the Ok button.

This helped me to tame down the pop-ups on the desktop. Now, if it's
Internet Explorer that is bugging you, then you might want to look at one
of the programs that is designed to block pop-up ads on the Internet. That
is a whole other subject.

Hope this has helped.
