Most certainly.  But there was plenty of NG in the area and a
NG/thermocouple power source was easier to maintain.  Bear in mind that
although solar cells were plentiful and their prices had come down from,
say, those of the mid-1960's, they weren't nearly as cheap as they now are
nor did they put out anything like the power they now do.
