You confuse "free" (as in beer" with "free"(as in liberty). NVDA happens to be both. However, even if NV Access ceased to exist today, there's nothing that would prevent someone else from picking up the source code and improving and maintaining it. In fact, there's nothing to prevent such now, even if NV Access continues as it is now. So the danger of NVDA becoming abandon ware, while not impossible, is certainly minimized. It's certainly less of an issue than it would be if, say, NVDA were a proprietary program where the company went out of business, leaving the source to no one, think Window Bridge if you want a real world example.
