Is it processor noise? if so, not much you can do with that except don't use 
onboard sound. usually add on sound cards help that. The CA-97 and AC-120 
onboard chips are some of the worst I've seen for that though what ever fell 
used on that computer at the career center where I used to go look for jobs, 
that had to be by far and away the worst it could possibly be even with 
headphones. If it's like a buzz, I'd use a different cable or better 
shielded cable.
Likely from what you describe, it's just the onboard sound, good headphones 
will let you hear it on them every time too, I can imagine with what you're 
doing it's probably worse though I find with a good add on sound card, 
usually, and I will stress *usually* they're cleaner.
