And don't forget the method described in QST awhile back.

Empty cat litter buckets with a PVC pipe cap mounted inside, 
a short stick of PVC pipe fastened to the cap, and the mast 
sat down inside that pipe.

To give some weight to this quick and dirty mast base, the 
bucket is filled with water, sand, gravel, or even concrete.
