I know what you mean about the key symbols.  I had the same problem with the
manual for the DX-398 and Grundig Satellit 800.  I ask on the mailing lists
for these radios and the list members were kind enough to tell me what these
symbols are.  I now have both these manuals in completely readable form with
speech.
