John,
The reason that some contacts don't show in your contact list is probably 
because you haven't completed a contact exchange with the other skype user. 
Once the other person authorizes the contact, they will show up in your 
list.

I have a few people that don't show up on my list and I don't on theirs on
skype, but it works. I guess it's just trial and error on them. I don't
worry about it, it's free and almost as annoying as the phone which is why
I'm usually only on by request.
