No serge protector will protect against a direct lightning hit. Also, as 1
of my good friends found out the hard way, it can still come in the ground
and do a ton of damage and there's no protection there. He probably didn't
have the best ground in the world but with all the different opinions on
grounding, I can see how anyone would make a mistake.
