You have got to be kidding me! Those devices are not connected to my
telephone lines, are much more tolerant of surges, and are frankly much
more ruggedly constructed.
I also disconect the ham gear that I have on outside antennas, although I
do have a halfway decent antenna system in my attic, that was put there
primarily for those times when I want to remain on the air but not risk a
lightning strike on the equipment.
If you think that sounds extreme, I took a direct hit here at the house two
years ago. I lost a antenna rotator, lots of coax, and an antenna, but of
all the radio equipment and computer equipment that I have here, the only
damage that I had was a blown out receiver front end on a GE Super Radio
2. Everything was disconnected, and I'm sure that helped a great
deal. Unfortunately the Super Radio just has such an efficient antenna,
there probably wasn't much I could do to protect it from having that much
energy that close by. By the way, I fried a telephone and some DSL filters
too. What makes you think the computer would have survived that if it had
been connected. Give me a break!
