Hi John,
I had a TS520 for many years.  As a novice, I made some 950 contacts between 
July 76 and February of 78 when I upgraded to general.  A little tip to save 
you some trouble.  If you get the same thing, no matter of the band switch, 
check the 10 mhz. button.  That is experience talking.  Good luck and 73.
