Kevin, K7rx put me onto some great marine style connecters   available
at West marine but be prepared to pay in gold grin.  They indeed are
very nice.  Perhaps he will chime in with more details.  

Personally I have used both and the professionally installed crimp on
connecters seem to work better than my attempts but this is a skill
question subject to variance for various people.

well, the radioshack coax and connectors are the worst all around, but
I'm the same way, with heavy coax, no crimp connectors. They're just
simply not as good. I guess the crimp N connectors are alright for some
reason, but I don't use those for anything right now.
