The noise does seem to be less using the Cobra, which is partly why I'm 
interested in figuring out why I can't get it to perform better on 40 
meters.

However, the DXCC does so well on that band that I've learned to put up with 
a little extra noise by turning the RF gain down a bit.  Also, there is a 
nice noise reduction feature on the TS590 that some folks have reported good 
luck with.  I haven't quite mastered it yet, but that may help some as well.
