Ron,
While I'm not a big user of the software, I do have it installed and
interfaced to the radio here.
First decide if you want to use the usb connection on the radio, or the
serial connection. They are independent of each other, either one will
work.
Under the "set up" drop down menu, arrow down to the "rig interface"
menu and hit enter.
Tab down and select your radio from the list (Kenwood in this case)
and select your comm port from the comm port list. and also the baud
rate. Menu 61 in the 590s for comm port baud rate (9600 default) and
menu 62 for the USB baud rate (115200 default).
Be sure baud rates in the radio and whatever comm port you choose are
the same.
Of course you need to know what comm port you are using on the pc. If
using a comm port to the serial connection, it has to be a straight
through cable and not a null modem cable which has 2 wires reversed.
If you use the usb connection to a usb port on the pc, you must install
the free virtual comm port software from Kenwood. It will install as a
comm port (be sure to note what number comm port is installed) and
select that port number in the N3FJP software.
If you ever want to use the built in sound chip in the radio, you need
to use the USB connection and the virtual comm port driver.
A usb to serial adapter should work, although not all are created
equal. You may have to go into windows device manager to confirm
what comm port you are using.
The other stuff like data bits, stop bits, etc should be set correctly
when the Kenwood radio is selected. If using JAWS, you may have to
use the JAWS cursor to read all the stuff on the setup window if you
wish, but the main stuff mentioned above will read ok without it and
should get you up and running.
