The reason that works is if grounds are to long, they tend to act as an 
antenna.  Bypassed to the shield, gives you a sheilded ground, a coax 
ground as it were.  It does rork.  We also use to run coax to our radios 
in the old days to give shielded power to cb or ham grigs.  That also 
worked for some noise as the battery acted like a large capacitor.
