Mike,
My friend sent you a email direct. On possible suggestions, his name was
John Ka9CAR.. this is what he wrote.

Hi Mike

I do not know what you mean by the audio sounding digital, but here are some
thoughts.

I have worn digital hearing aids for 6 years, and the Kenwood audio sounds
wonderful to me. My aids use a behind the ear microphone and an in the ear
speaker. The only difference I notice when using or not using the hearing
aids is due to my high frequency hearing loss.

Perhaps it is some interference between your cochlear implant coupling
circuit and the radio.

Are you using headphones when this happens? The audio frequency magnetic
field from the headphones may be a problem or may be intermittently
triggering the Tele-coil if you have that in your hearing aid.

There may be some higher frequencies passing from the radio that interfere
with the link. I have a television that uses S P D I F optical audio out.
When I route the output of the device to my home stereo, the audio is
excellent on the speakers, but when I route it through my infrared wireless
headphones the audio is nearly covered up by an interfering signal.
Apparently the digital signal makes it through the audio path and then
mixes with the carrier for the infrared headphones. Perhaps something
similar is happening with your situation.

I am sure someone will know how to build an audio bandpass filter that you
could put in line with the Kenwood audio. Maybe you can find one of the old
external audio bandpass filters that M F J used to sell for ssb and cw. I
used one with my radio 40 years ago and I have seen them for sale on ebay.

One last thought. You can route the Kenwood audio to your PC speakers or
other device using either the u s b sound card built into the radio or the
fixed level audio out normally used for data. That audio is sourced before
the final audio amplifier in the Kenwood so if it is the last amplifier in
the Kenwood that causes the problem this might be a work around.
