Andy,

I didn't chime in earlier on this thread since I have no experience with
external auto tuners.  However since you asked  about manual tuners and
random wire:  I use a Palstar AT 1500 CV manual tuner.  Besides the usual
coax inputs, it also has  terminals for balanced line or random wire.   It
is fairly easy to tune with the help of the  tuning tone in the  LDG TW-1
meter.  Never used it with a random wire, so  can't comment on it.

I think your life would be a lot easier if you could get up some sort of
dipole or vertical.
