what if you could find just a short piece of PVC piping and the caps for the
end, they make it that width about the size of the pill bottle, if you know
a plumber they'd probably have that size for scrap they'd probably give you.

The size would probably be about right, but I am thinking that the
prescription pill bottle probably wouldn't fare much better than the 35 mm
film can.  I have found that the film cans will last in the sun about 18 to
24 months before they become brittle and disintegrate!
