Yep, you're right on both counts.  THe shacks couldn't be expanded, and 
icoms could.  As I recall, that was one of the specific design changes 
radio shack insisted on.  I sold commercial two way back in those days, 
and you're absolutely right as far as the selector knob.  BTW, they also 
made a verson for air craft band which was a cool radio with some 
additional navigation stuff.
