I am referring to an actual SWR reading.
What I thought I could do is get somewhere in the ball park by first
adjusting the antenna for maximum receive noise, then taking an SWR reading
at that point, and moving the antenna up or down from there so as to tweak
things to get the best SWR reading.
I would think that, after a while, I'd get it somewhat down to a more exact
science, once I get a feeling for how the antenna moves, what that does for
the SWR, etc.
Another possibility that I just thought of is this: I do have an old analog
SWR meter with one of those old Conway tuning aids that works off reflected
power. Maybe that would give me the continuous tone for tuning that you are
referring to. I wouldn't know exactly what my true SWR is, but if I tune
for the lowest tone, I should be ok, I would think.
I'm still in the "thinking out loud" mode here.
Let me know if any of this makes sense, or if there is a better strategy I'm
not thinking of.
I suppose I could be in the market for one of those LDG TW1 watt meters, but
right now, I don't quite have the bucks in the budget.
