Tom, I enjoyed listening to your interview with Pete and Nancy on their
podcast: Eyes on Success." I can tell that you and I will have much to
discuss when we finally get together either online or in person. Our
backgrounds are not all that different; I was a triple major in
undergraduate school, Sociology, psychology, and business. As one who has
performed considerable research using various research designs, including
both quantitative and qualitative, I think we will have quite an engaging
exchange. <Smile>

I didn't realize that you have been blind from birth, and from a cause that
was completely avoidable. Your exchanges with Pete and Nancy caused me to
renew my awareness of how different our experiences are given different
levels of eyesight, and at what stage in our life development we became
blind. Most people, without thinking very much about it, would just assume
that since you and I are both totally blind, without any light perception,
our total life experiences would be very similar, if not almost the same.
Whereas you and I both know that is not the case at all since I had perfect
eyesight until I was 8 years old, and you have never been able to see
anything ever.

Since I have had the full range from total eyesight to no eyesight and
several variations in-between, I know there is a tremendous difference if
one has even very limited eyesight, e.g. being able to just see if a light
is on or off on one's transceiver, or the lights that indicate which lines
are in use on a multi-line phone system, etc.

Thanks for letting people know about this, Lloyd.

I need to listen to it as well sometime. We recorded it back in early
November, and I'm trying to remember exactly what I said.

Hopefully, there will be a jem or two of useful information in there
somewhere.

I haven't listened to this podcast, but it might be interesting. KB8TYJ

Starting off the fifth year of this weekly, half hour radio show / podcast
we have:

1501 Sociology of Disability (Dec. 31, 2014)

Individuals with disabilities including visual impairments have all had
experiences interacting with the majority non-disabled society. This week,
hosts Nancy and Peter Torpey speak with Tom Behler, a blind professor of
Sociology about his studies of how people with disabilities are treated by
society in general and how this has been evolving.
