On February 14, the Common Carrier Bureau issued a Public Notice seeking a
nomination for a position on the Board of Directors of the Universal
Service Administrative Company (USAC) as the previous member representing
low-income consumers resigned. Universal Service includes E-rate &
Lifeline-Linkup programs. The Common Carrier Bureau recommends that the
low-income consumer groups nominate a single candidate to expedite the
process. Written nominations are due March 16, 2001. Nominations must be
made according to the instructions found in the public notice for DOCKET
NOS. 96-45, 97-21, DA 01-370.
The Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) is a private, not for
profit corporation that is responsible for providing every state and
territory in the United States with access to affordable telecommunications
services through the Universal Service Fund. All of the country's
communities, including remote communities, such as rural areas, low-income
neighborhoods, rural health care providers, public and private schools and
public libraries, are eligible to seek support from the Universal Service
Fund.
