SPECIAL EVENTS

DIABETES AND MEDICARE BENEFITS CAMPAIGN. The Health Care Financing
Administration and the National Diabetes Education Program has recently
launched a campaign in May to remind older adults with diabetes about the
importance of routine blood sugar monitoring to manage their disease and
that Medicare benefits are available to help them do so. The National
Diabetes Education Program is a joint federal program of the National
Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Of the 16 million Americans who have diabetes, an estimated 4.5 million are
Medicare beneficiaries. Medicare covers much of the cost of the equipment
and supplies that patients need to test their blood sugar levels.

Campaign materials include patient education brochures, posters, countertop
displays, print ads (all in English and Spanish) and a community kit to
promote the campaign. Materials are available through the National
Diabetes Information Clearinghouse at 1-800-438-5383 or by downloading from
the NDEP website at http://ndep.nih.gov. Contact Mimi Lising at NIH at
[log in to unmask] if you would like more information about the campaign
and how to get involved.

TELEVISION

THE FIRST MEASURED CENTURY. Though history is often related in anecdotal
terms, THE FIRST MEASURED CENTURY analyzes history through data and
measurement. This statistical analysis reveals how the lives of everyday
Americans changed over the last century. Discover a century where the
United States went from half the size of the four biggest European nations
to twice the size of all of them combined, and a nation of 50 million
taking in 25 million immigrants in the course of two generations. Also
witness the ever_changing flow of city populations, as America becomes the
first majority suburban nation; a nation with less mobility today than in
1900; the sharp rise and slow fall of violent crime rates and the country's
increasing wealth. For more information on viewing times, check out the
PBS website at www.pbs.org.
