Subject: LET'S GET THE BALL ROLING
The primary reason I subscribed to the list is because I am working on a
screen reader for Windows. My idea is to maybe get some sort of opensource
project going. Although there are usable commercial packages out there, I
believe that an open source project will serve the following useful
purposes.
It may serve as a test bed for new and experimental ideas.
If a viable open source product can be developed, it should be possible to
assess technologies such as active accessibility in an environment where the
authors of the screen reading software will assess matters less defensively
than with commercial packages.
It seems likely that such a project will also create fruitful discussion and
experimentation with different approaches to interface of the screen reading
software.
If such a project is successful and can provide a nice free screen reader,
so much the better for all of us.
I would like to hear some suggestions and opinions on whether such a project
is viable and also about the steps that I can take to create an active
useful opensource project. That is why I enquired whether it is possible to
work with people that develop programs for systems like linux.
I am also interested in the general issue of communicating information to a
blind computer user. Is it for example possible to develop a drawing
program for blind users that use a mouse and sound to make and study
drawings.
Looking foreward to hearing from you
