Subject: Deaf Collection

 Library Friends and Colleagues,
In recent years, I shared my concern with some of you about using the
name -- deaf and hard of hearing -- for a library collection that focuses on
the language, culture and history of the deaf community, auxiliary aids,
hearing loss, cochlear implants and other medical aspects. Most of you agree
that the name -- Deaf Culture and Hearing Loss -- would be a more appropriate
name for such collection than DHOH.
Now, you may be interested to know that one state deaf/hoh-related service
agency recently adopted this name - Deaf Culture and Hearing Loss - for its
resource library collection. (See below) Arizona Commission for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing is a registered subscriber to THE RED NOTEBOOK.

Deaf Culture and Hearing Loss Resource Library Available at ACDHH

The Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing welcomes the
public to use its resource library, filled with collections of books,
videotapes, and CDs that offer information on a wide range of subjects of
interest to the deaf, hard of hearing, parents, and professionals who work
with them.

The collection contains approximately 400 videotapes, 300 books, and a dozen
prominent magazine titles. There are textbooks on American Sign Language,
sign language interpreting materials, CD-based workshops, videotapes on deaf
culture, books on assistive technology and the cochlear implant, and
autobiographies and novels.

A limit of two items can be taken out for up to two weeks, and two forms of
ID are required prior. A complete listing of materials available at the
resource library is online at http://www.acdhh.org/library.asp.

The library is housed at ACDHH's main office at 1400 West Washington, Suite
126, in Phoenix. The hours coincide with the office's schedule and are 8
a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Established in 1977, ACDHH is a state agency serving the deaf and hard of
hearing populations of the state of Arizona. In addition to information and
referral, ACDHH administers the state relay service, performs interpreter
licensure, and oversees a distribution program of telecommunications
equipment for those with a hearing loss. To learn more about the agency,
please visit www.acdhh.org.
