Dear List Members:

In their upgrade of the elevators on campus, the elevator engineers are
installing audible signals in all the elevators, including in the elevators
inthe building where I work.

At first, the placement of the device against a surface caused a loud signal to
be produced. However, the elevator engineer - on his own initiative - placed
padding [cotton?] or insulation around the device and moved the device slightly
away from the surface, so now the signal is very pleasant and unobtrusive.

The experience of watching the complex upgrade of the assistive technology
devices that we all enjoy known as elevators, learning from the experts, has
been educational in itself.

My suggestion for making the elevators as accessible as possible in all ways:
consult with the experts who know how to do it (also sometimes at no extra
cost): the elevator engineers.
