EASI News August 18 1998 Video on the Web

Contents:
1 EASI begins video on the web
2 Adapt-it online workshop Sept. 14
3 EASI-SEM online workshop begins Sept. 28

1 EASI is inaugurating its use of the web for broadcasting video with
one of its 3 videos developed with a grant from the National Science
Foundation. It is on the web at http://www.rit.edu/~easi and is also
captioned. The video is only the first of many videos we will be
archiving on our site along with the audio files already posted. You
can download the Real Player needed to play it from this site. There is
a free player available. The 19 minute video can be viewed either in
whole or by one of its segments in smaller chunks.

EASI's Guide to Awareness Issues and Laboratory Adaptations, the third
videotape in the "EASI Street to Science, Engineering and Mathematics"
trilogy includes both an awareness section on dealing with negative
attitudes and a section on making science laboratories accessible to
people with disabilities. This 19-minute videotape demonstrates
special computerized data acquisition equipment including serial boxes
that will interface with pH probes, light probes and distance and
temperature probes. It also features students with disabilities
talking about their experiences in math and science classes.

2 Starting Sept. 14, ADAPT-IT is a four-week course providing an
overview to the topic of adaptive computing and is ideal for
administrators, teachers, librarians, computer support staff, ADA
compliance officers and service providers. It focuses on how to set up
computing technology and services for individuals with disabilities.
Taught by people who have consulted extensively on adaptive technology
and information access.

   * this workshop has been revised and enhanced in 1998 to include text
assignments and web assignments. New material related to special
education and students in K-12 has also been included.

The EASI video on adaptive technology and the text, Information Access
and Adaptive computing comes with the $195 registration fee. For anyone
wanting continuing education units, these are provided. For information

3 ONLINE COURSE ON BUILDING SCIENCE AND MATH FOUNDATIONS IN STUDENTS
WITH DISABILITIES TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 28

EASI-SEM, an online course on science, engineering and math access for
students with disabilities will begin September 28. The course, which is
offered through email, focuses on the barriers faced by students with
disabilities and the accommodations and strategies that will helps students
with disabilities work and study in the technical fields. The material is
aimed at service providers, teachers, administrators, and it is also helpful
for parents.

Too many students with disabilities reach college without the foundational
background they need in math, science, or adaptive technology. Without these
basic foundational skills, students often fail in meeting their college core
requirements in science and math, and they don't get the opportunity to decide
if they'd like to major in the technical fields.
