I have been trying to remember what was said on the 20/20 program about
MT. & water contamination. There was a community that was profiled in
this story. Their water source(s)--wells--were contaminated by the only
gas station in the town. This has now become a virtual ghost town. The
residents get water that is trucked in for drinking and cooking. This
tells me that filters like those used on water faucets would be
ineffective in removing MTBE's. I also recall something about the MTBE's
binding with water molecules since the intent of the MT. for gasoline is
to increase oxygen. The poeple of this community also were advised to
take cooler and shorter showers due to the atomization of vapors that
could be inhaled. I don't recall if MT. is classified as a human
carcinogen (yet).

Our local water reservoir had an algae bloom several years ago that
caused the water to stink! Showering made us feel like we were bathing
in swamp water. We switched to bottled water for drinking at the at time
and have never gone back to the chemically treated stuff. The water we
purchase was processed by reverse osmosis.

Does anyone else remember data from this episode of 20/20?? Michael, do
you remember anything else about this program?
