I think I'm catching the tail-end of this conversation thread but I would
like to add my two cents. I used to be against 'winmodems' and nothing takes
the place of a hardware modem especially if you are running a non-Windows
based PC. However, with the right processor, which is generally better than
the processor the manufacturer recommends, USR-based and Lucent-based
'winmodem' are good products. I currently used a Lucent-based modem in my
work machine and in my son's 'play' machine and both provide me with good
performance.

However, I do keep a hardware based modem handy and available.
