I never caulk. It never works. Mechanics of the joint are usually such that
the caulk either tears itself apart or pulls away from the substrate in a
matter of months. But, then when I am installing new siding, I always insist
that all mating surfaces are painted before installation -- even if just
with a primer. Lots of objections for contractors on this point -- slows
production and makes a bit of a mess. But it beats clients angry over flaky
paint.

Rob - is the horizontal siding ship-lapped? Why is there a need for caulking
at all?
