ECC stands for "error correcting code". ECC error checking is different
from parity error checking in that ECC is capable of detecting and
correcting 1-bit errors, and is able to automatically correct errors without
halting the system (and requiring user intervention).
Not all chipsets support it ... Intel's 430 HX and 440 FX, LX, and BX sets
do, to name some. Once installed on a supporting system, the BIOS support
for it must be enabled in setup.
Even on systems that don't have ECC "RAM", this same error correcting code
is used to correct errors on the fixed disk drive.
