8 MB is plenty, and it may be fast enough.
Does the driver provide a 32-bit setting? x86 CPUs transfer data to memory
in 8-bit, 16-bit or 32-bit wide chunks; a 24-bit colour setting means that
every write of a pixel requires two memory transfers, one 8 bits wide and one
16 bits wide. [Caching video RAM can help; you might have that (or some
other caching) turned off.]
Have you told the BIOS to allocate an IRQ to the video card? Is it sharing
that with any other device?
