This discussion calls to mind the studies that show that a
ketogenic diet may increase the need for salt, due to its strong
diuretic effect. Lyle McDonald on the lowcarb list has posted
excerpts from Phinney's studies of ketogenic diets that show that
up to 5g/day of sodium (and high levels of other electrolytes as
well) may be needed to prevent various uncomfortable side-effects
of ketosis. Since the Yanomama diet, and most other HG diets,
are not ketogenic, this wouldn't apply in general to paleodiets.
But people trying ketogenic variations of paleodiet should
probably take note.
