I'm sure fine ladies of those days didn't defecate; therefore, how could
they possibly talk to a plumber?

From the Real Estate Record & Guide, 11/21/1891, a letter from a plumbing
firm:
"To have asked a lady to call on a plumber to select her own style of
bathroom ten years ago would have been deemed an insult, whereas now it is
quite usual for ladies, accompanied by their husbands, to call on us to
discuss the style and appointments..." of the bathrooms in a new house.
