David:  Immediate thing, since you've not mentioned it, is check the
CABLES! It is common for them to fail. If the original from the 486
*worked*, try it, then try a new one. Also some of those older
drives/cables would let you plug the connecter in backwards - The
*usual* standard is pin-1 (red edge) positioned closest to the power
supply socket on the hard drive. Imaginative design engineers *should*
have prevented that possibility! HTH
