My mother has asked that I remind this august group that sauerkraut
prevents...scurvy!!
Living on the edge of the Cincinnati area's German cultureshed, I
have to deal with sauerkraut continuously; it menaces from all sides. My
husband, a Hoooosier, bought five cans of it at Big Lots one day. They sat
in the cupboard for months. I finally used a small portion of one on some
pork chops and found that the result was edible.
Ken tells us that he read about cavers and what not to eat in caves.
Bagels are the best caving food because they can be beat to a pulp and as
long as they don't get soaked in cave water, they remain edible. The same
cannot be said for any other form of bread or cracker in a cave. Problem
with eating sardines is that one is left with the oil.... and MUST drink it,
becos it is 110% vile cave behavior to dump sardine oil in a cave stream.
OK there is nothing in here about historic presevration and I am
becoming profoundly uneasy at my exposed position so farewell.
