Before you start changing parts.....
have you downloaded and installed the Windows patch from the AMD site?
http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/k623d/win95_update_k6.html

BTW, at the risk of sounding picky, AMD stopped making plain K6 units at
the 300Mhz level.  Your friend's PC must be either a K6-2 or a K6-3.
