yes you can use a battery that's slightly different voltage.
Rayovac makes a replacement battery #844a 4.5 volt
that will work in almost any system. I routinely use them.
You can order them at: www.cyberguys.com .
I think the expected life of these batteries is around 3-7 years.
In a pinch you can use a plastic AA battery holder
that Radio shack makes with the appropriate number of AA batteries.
